Porsche 911 Turbo S - Best Idea For Supercar Enthusiasts

Meta: Launched at the North American International Auto Show, the Porsche 911 Turbo S is a natural combination between Carrera's design and the features of the 911 Turbo.

In the overseas market, the 911 Turbo S competes with the Audi R8 and McLaren 570S, but it has an advantage due to the reputation for more than 5 decades.

History of Porsche 911 Turbo S

In this article, we will talk about the origins of the “S” version of the 911 Turbo. And the effort to develop Turbo version into GT2 version in the subsequent 911 model change.

1991 - The 964 Turbo S2

This is a precursor of Porsche 911 Turbo S and just 20 units were manufactured. The actual similarity parts make it different from the usual 964 Turbo 3.3 that was added by an American racing suit: Andial Road and Racing on the West Coast (California).

The 964 Turbo S2 has been reported that it operated between 322 bhp and 381 bhp, which may be the same as official Turbo S in 1992. However, Porsche does not mention this in its official documentation.

1992 – The 964 Turbo S

At the Geneva Motor Show in 1992, Porsche presented a turbocharged mode for the first time with the name: The 911 Turbo S in the 964 model series. This sports car reached the top level of performance with 381 horsepower engine. Besides, this product based on the model of 911 Turbo S2 which was raced successfully by Hurley Haywood in the Supercar Serie in 1991.

Customers can recognize this was racing cars due to the exterior with side air intakes at the rear and the flatter rear wing. At that time, The Porsche 911 Turbo S weighted 180 kg or 396 lb, lighter than Turbo nowadays.

The 964 Turbo S was able to accelerate from a standstill to 100km just in 4.6 secs, and the top speed reached 290 km/h or 180 mph.

1993 - 964 Turbo S Le Mans GT

The 964 Turbo S Le Mans GT was sold to the customer teams who joined the new GT class. To manufacture this product, Porsche decided to select a biturbo power unit displacing 3.16 liters and deliver 474 hp maximum output.

Also, this sports car weighted 1000 kg and equipped a five-speed gearbox. It was also featured the fuel tank in the luggage holding 120 liters and the oil tank put in the front to serve long-distance race.

1997 – The 993 Turbo S

This was the last bastion of the air-cooled 911 Turbo era. This model was a 450-hp top model. This twin-turbo engine was the 42 bhp stronger than the normal 408 bhp 993 Turbo.

With AWD, the Turbo could now easily reach 0-100 km/h sprint of 4.1 seconds and safely hold a top speed of 300 km/h. The diameter of the wheel was 18-inch and featured hollow spokes. About the interior, leather and carbon symbolize the monopoly of the Turbo S which was built only 345 units.

2004 – The 996 Turbo S

Released just a year after launching all-new 996 Carrera, the 996 Turbo S with the water-cooled engines seemed to fly off the showrooms in huge numbers.

2010 – The 997.2 Turbo S

This version was equipped new engine, new PDK. The 911 Turbo S consumes less fuel than standard 911 Turbo. The 997.2 Turbo S proud that it provides the highest level of the drivetrain in the sports car series of Porsche. Therefore, this model has a standard, all the performance-enhancing features available as options on the 911 Turbo

The interior of The 911 Turbo S

The 911 Turbo S interior is not much different from the base 911. The interior is covered in leather, and the standard sports seat provides a comfortable feeling. Cargo space is limited to the front trunk and behind the front seat. The rear seats are just for display purposes, the same as other 911.

On The 911 Turbo S model. There are the decorative trims running along the dashboard, center console and door trims and all are finished in carbon. Also, with the combination of two-tone colors and materials such as carbon, aluminum, and mahogany, The 911 Turbo S has plenty of scope for personalization.

About the technology

The 911 Turbo S is still equipped with the old Porsche PCM entertainment system but has some new tricks on it. Apple Carplay is designed as a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot by default but still lacks Android Auto.

The 7-inch screen inside The 911 Turbo S is fast and easy to use, with fast browsing and voice recognition to reduce attention. If you want the latest and greatest PCM versions, as shown in the new Cayenne and Panamera, you'll have to wait for the next 911.

The instrument cluster still keeps Porsche's traditional layout, but the fourth left-hand case has been replaced by a configurable display. With a steering wheel lever, 911 Turbo S can display different support such as temperatures, the current song or even a small map with navigation instructions.

Some settings, such as the configuration of the individual mode is only available through this special screen. This can be confusing for new owners, but it will not take you long to understand everything.

Conclusion

In conclusion, with outstanding features, powerful design and top technology, The Porsche 911 Turbo S is an effective choice for sports car enthusiasts.
